Winter Propane Safety Tips for South Shore Residents
Start the new year off on the right foot with respect to your home heating. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of an emergency is by regular maintenance of your equipment and educating your family on propane safety. At Pilgrim Propane, our customers’ safety is our top priority. While propane is a safe and reliable source to heat your Massachusetts home, it is important to know what to do in the case of a gas leak.
What to Do If You Smell Gas
One of the most common ways gas leaks are detected is by smell. An odorant is added to propane and is often compared to the smell of skunk spray or rotten eggs. If you suspect a gas leak in your home, please take the following action:
- Immediately extinguish all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not turn on and off devices. This includes lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones.
- Leave the area immediately. Get everyone out of your home or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
- Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
- From a nearby area away from the gas leak, call Pilgrim Propane right away. If you can’t reach a Pilgrim Propane team member, call 911 or the local fire department.
- Do not return to your home until Pilgrim Propane or emergency responder determines that it is safe to do so.
- Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, A Pilgrim Propane technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
Please do not hesitate to call our experts. We offer 24/7 after-hours answering services to be there when you need us most.
